Filipino Martial Arts is known to be a stick-fighting arts but what a lot of non-die hard martial artist don’t know is that the FMA is a complete system including all length of weapons including projectile weapons and open hands. Here we demonstrate the footwork and kicking arts of the FMA called ‘Sikaran’. A kicking arts developed in Baras, Philippines by the local farmers. Guro Jay showcases the Sikaran based out of the Corto Kadena Largo Mano Eskrima system (aka Visayan Style) of the late Maestro Sonny Umpad. If you want more information you can visit http://www.pendulumarts.wordpress.com or come to a class at the Eskabo Daan school in San Francisco where we teach the Visayan Style Corto Kadena Larga Mano (VSCK or VSCKLM) system on Thursdays at 5:30pm

Today it was an honor that I was invited and got to witness UFMAC recognizing Grand Master Carlito Bonjoc, long time friend of Maestro Sonny Umpad ! Congrats GM Carlito!
Grand Master Robert Castro also introduced me to all the Grand Masters as one of the lineage holders of Maestro Sonny’s curriculum and promoter of the FMA. I was grateful to be in the room with all the greats of the FMA and honor them as my elders and for paving the path for martial artists like myself to thrive in and share the arts to the world.
Today Master Carlito Bonjoc of Mata Sa Bagyo martial arts school is recognized by 6 different Grand Masters and Masters including Eskabo Daan Grand Master Robert Castro, Grand Master Michael Giron of Original Bahala Na, Grand Master Max Pallens of Senkoteros, Grand Master Dexter Labonog of Bahala Na Multi-Style, Master Emil Bautista of Kajukenbo Self Defense Institute and Grand Master Alfredo Bandalan of Bandalan Doce Pares of the Unified Filipino Martial Arts Council (UFMAC). Congratulations to warrior and leader, Master Bonjoc for all his contributions to the Martial Arts and Filipino Culture!
UFMAC, is an organization formed by a panel of current Grand Masters from different martial arts systems and their mission is to provide an open forum for the preservation, promotion and unification of the Filipino Martial Arts community. I will share more about this experience and some of my personal take aways soon. I definately wanted to get these images out to show that our culture and our arts are thriving but stay tuned for the specifics of the story. Congratulations again to UFMAC for being organized to promote the culture and our teachers as well as to GM Carlito for all his contributions and hard work!
Hey folks! If you’re in the Bay Area November please check out this show. I’ll be performing as a healer incorporating VSCK Eskrima movement. Support the arts!
Our school, The Visayan Style Corto Kadena Eskrima Martial Arts School, are thankful and honored to be invited by Grand Master Robert Castro and Punong Guro Joseph Bautista of ESKABO DAAN Filipino Martial Arts School to do a demonstration with them representing Maestro Sonny Umpad’s Style at the San Francisco GIANTS Filipino Heritage NIght.
We are grateful to be invited by SF Giants, Filipino Heritage Night organizers with special thanks to Gavin Tolentino for the tickets and Eskabo Daan school for having us share.
On April 28, 2012 the Visayan Style Corto Kadena group got together to meet with the son and daughter of the late and great Maestro Sonny Umpad. We gathered at our big brother’s house, Guro Renato Alfonso, as he organized a needed get together for the brother/sisterhood to flow, eat, and meet the Umpad children.
The VSCK style of Filipino Martial Arts knife training demonstrated here by instructors Greg Manalo and Jay Jasper Pugao showcases the “2nd Flow”, of the one of the ‘three’ types of flow within the pendulum. In the 2nd flow, the ‘players’ are within range easily accessing the ‘2nd points’ which is the knees and elbows, whereas the ‘first flow’ where the fighters/players are in a further range accessing only the ‘tips’ or the wrist and foot/feet or the ‘third flow’ where the range is closest, here the players can easily reach the ‘third points’ like the shoulders/head and hips/body area as bigger targets.
The fighters/players A and B are here are ‘giving and receiving’, free-styling the 17 strikes and guiding away slices, pokes, and cuts trying to evade cleanly with no contact (in a more realistic knife fight usually all it take is one cut/slice/poke). The artists like fighter/ player A then sets up fighter/ player B to look for openings for themselves while proactively ‘opening up for his own angles and defense’ to set up player B, their opponent, to commit so player A can then react, evade, and then attack with a strike/slice/poke to disable player B.
We hope this video can be helpful for your flow and pendulum in practice and in theory.
Maraming Salamat po.
